American Ceramic Society now showing at McGroarty

The annual ceramics exhibition at McGroarty Arts Center has continued to grow in quality and reputation as evidenced by our latest partnership with the American Ceramics Society (ACS) Design Chapter of Southern California.  ACS is a non-profit arts organization that supports the work of potters, sculptors, teachers, students and ceramic designers who seek to expand public awareness and appreciation of the many facets of clay.

Los Angeles resident Joan Gamberg is the bridge between McGroarty and ACS.  She serves on the board of directors for both organizations and got the idea of uniting the two after attending McGroarty’s 2009 ceramics exhibit. She says, “I was quite impressed with the artwork and the wonderful, magical ambience” that makes McGroarty Arts Center such a beloved community gem. Now Gamberg plans to “extend the ACS’s reach to a new public by sitting the show in Tujunga and by adding McGroarty to the Ceramics Society’s three year venue rotation for its Annual Juried/President’s Show.”

The free exhibition is currently running, and will continue through June 26, Monday-Saturday 10AM-6PM. The exhibition highlights the work of professional ACS ceramicists as well as McGroarty Arts Center's students. Ceramic artist and instructor Brian Peshek, MFA, is the curator for the show.  He has selected a variety of work from 37 artists.  The works selected cover a broad range of functional and expressive forms, each with unique glaze surfaces, texture, and craftsmanship.

Biliana Popova is this year's featured artist and juror. Popova is known for her hand-built stoneware pieces, whose surfaces she refines to near perfection using simple tools.

Proceeds from the professional gallery benefit McGroarty Arts Center and the American Ceramics Society.
