McGroarty Arts Center plays a pivotal role in the local community by offering affordable, ongoing eight-week classes for adults and children in many varieties of fine, literary and performing arts, as well as many cultural and community events throughout the year.

Nestled in the Verdugo foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Tujunga, California, the impressive stone structure of the McGroarty Arts Center was once the private residence of John Steven McGroarty (1862-1944) and his wife Ida. McGroarty was a Congressman, dramatist, journalist, historian, and Poet Laureate for the state of California (1933-44). Built in 1923, this beautiful home, alive with mementos of California's colorful history was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument (#63) by the City of Los Angeles on February 4, 1970. In 1974, the City began operating McGroarty as an arts center. In 1995, budget cuts forced the city to divest six community arts centers, including McGroarty. It is now the responsibility of a volunteer Board of Directors called the Friends of McGroarty Arts Center (F.O.M.A.C.) to raise the majority of the operating costs and manage the Center.
