Biliana Popova

A bit about me:

Biliana Popova is a Los Angeles-based artist that works in sculptural and decorative ceramic art, metal, and fibercraft mediums. She is an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College and a ceramics teacher at Flintridge Preparatory School. She holds a Master's in Ceramics from the National Art Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, and a Fine Arts High School Diploma. Since 2003 Biliana has taught ceramics in LA and has led numerous workshops and lectures at local universities and colleges. Biliana is a nationally recognized artist with multiple awards. She has exhibited at Laguna Art Museum, MOMA, LACMA, and AMOCA, to name a few. In addition, her work is on the cover of Lark Books' "500 Figures in Clay", 2014.

I love form. I have always found it fascinating; from the seashells to the rolling hills in a landscape - curves, silhouettes, and cast shadows engage my attention. I am transfixed by how forms transition into one another. In my work, I predominantly explore the female form. For me, the female body transcends emotion.

I have two categories of sculptural work: large, which has a monumental appeal and is constructed with clay slabs; the shapes are simplified and have a calm demeanor. And the small sculptures are built solid, like quick studies and sketches; they are dynamic and playful.

In some of my work, I explored a symbiosis between the "Figurative" and the "Objects of Function." I create a double-exposed image by applying graphic images to the sculptures. It gives the figures a space to sit in and a new context.
